Moving from Dokeos to Chamilo
Are you using Dokeos right now and worrying about what the move from Dokeos to Chamilo means for you? Read on...
Case 1: I'm a teacher using the Dokeos free campus
You now have about 3 months to decide whether you should follow Chamilo or Dokeos. After 3 months, you will still be able to move your course from campus.dokeos.com to campus.chamilo.org, but you might loose a bit of data during the move (depending on the features you use in Dokeos).
As a teacher, the only thing you should worry about is your course. You will not be able to move your students.
We believe that you will choose widely, from a pedagogical point of view, and that you will make the best decision for you and your students when deciding to remain with Dokeos or move on with Chamilo.
To see the new features provided by Chamilo, please see our download page, which contains all the details.
If you decide to stick to Dokeos, then nothing will change for you. You will be able to continue using the Dokeos free campus for a long time (hopefully)
If you decide to move to Chamilo, this is what you should do:
- Enter campus.dokeos.com
- Enter your course and click the "Backup" tool
- Select "Create a backup"
- Select "Create a full backup" and click the button "Create a backup"
- Click the link on the right side, which includes your course code and ends with the ".zip" extension. This will download the file on your computer (remember where it is stored, you will need it shortly)
- Go to campus.chamilo.org. Login as a teacher.
- Create a new course. This will be used as a container for your course backup.
- Enter your course and click the "Backup" tool
- Select "Import a backup"
- Select "Local file" then click the "Browse" button and choose your backup on your computer
- Click the "Import" button. That's it. You can now enjoy your course in the Chamilo campus
Case 2: I'm a teacher and I'm using my own installation
Then we consider you (for this part) as an administrator. Go to Case 4.
Case 3: I'm a teacher using the Dokeos campus of my organization
The most important thing to know is that you won't feel much difference. While we have added a good number of new features and improvements, they will only appear if you look for them and enable them, which means they won't require you to train your students or teacher colleagues. This is just a new minor version of your preferred campus.
Option 1: I'm the one who decide that your organization will move to Chamilo
Then choose wisely, from a pedagogical point of view, with a look to the future. You can find more information on the Chamilo project on this website, and you can try it out on our Demo campus (see corresponding tab). Once you have chosen, ask your administrator to upgrade your portal to Chamilo (or not). See Case 4 for that.
Option 2: I'm not the one who decides
Then you have absolutely nothing to do. The upgrade will not make you loose any data. You will just be able to enjoy a few interesting new features, with less bugs.
Case 4: I'm an administrator and I'm wondering what's best for my organization
First of all, you will need to look around a little bit and figure out which project you want to follow in the future. This implies consulting your teachers and asking them what they consider more sensible. Upgrading without teacher consultation is just going to lead them to hate you, no matter how good the new solution is. Once you have decided to move to Chamilo, please ensure you read the upgrade/installation documentation and do not forget to execute a backup procedure.
Case 5: I have a business that provides Dokeos services and want to know what I should use in the future
As a company leader, you know that you have to provide the best solution to your customers. Not only the less expensive or the one that is the most free, but most than anything the one that guarantees a stable and efficient solution to your customers in terms of pedagogical features. As such, the Chamilo association intends to go further than the current Dokeos or Moodle project, and ensure that all companies providing services around our software can do so in an efficient way. You will probably need to analyse the project's activity for a while before taking a decision, and that's fine by us. We're sure we'll convince you we're doing the right thing and that we're doing it well. Just make sure you don't forget to check up on us from time to time... If you want to be a member of the association or an official provider, please check the "Contribute" tabe above.
