Chamilo 2.0 for Secundary Schools

Chamilo 2.0 for Secundary Schools

Postby Jeroen » Mon Jan 25, 2010 9:53 am

 Hi,

I recently installed Dokeos 1.8.6 for my Secundary School (K12+).

I was very pleased to find that I could use Dokeos for schools (opposed to using Dokeos for universities).

The way a Secundary School uses Dokeos/Chamilo differs much from an university.

We do not want students/pupils to subscribe themselves to courses but instead create a course and give a class access to that course.

Also, we don't have unique course-names (one of the mandatory fields in creating a course).

Now, Dokeos supported classes out of the box. For the unique course-name, I altered the sourcecode to generate a (fugly) random string, so no 2 course-id's were the same.

  • Will Chamilo 2 support classes?

  • Will Chamilo 2 have the option to restrict pupils from searching and subscribing themselves?

    • and instead be subscribed through classes which are selected by Teachters?

  • Will Chamilo 2 be able to auto-generate course-id's?

    • random string

    • or based on the course_name, appended by a random thingie?

Can you guys put up a test platform for us to toy around in?

Thanks in advance for the beautiful software you undoubtely are writing,

(also, pardon my English, I'm a native Dutch speaker)

and keep up the good work!

Hi Jeroen,

Welcome to Chamilo !

Not allowing pupils / users to subscribe to courses directly is essential funcionality as far as I'm concerned. Even though students can apply for access to most of the courses on the Chamilo installation at Eramushogeschool Brussel, the default is still that they don't do it themselves. The setting is even disabled by default (it's up to teachers to decide whether they open it up to every registered user).

Classes / sessions are still a big "void" / unknown in Chamilo 2.0. We need to come up with something though to easily allow subscription / access to one or more courses other then manual subscription of each user. Stay tooned for more in this subject in the future.

Course codes ... they were downright problematic to say the least. Basically, that'w why we got rid of them (being obligatory) altogether in 2.0. Of course a course still has an internal course number, but the long alphanumerical course code which took / takes centerstage in 1.8 is no longer necessary or even required.

As for the test platform: I'm sure that can and will be arranged in the near future.

Regards,

Hans
