"gd" extension, what does it do?

 what does this extension do? is it really needed? it is on red on the status page of our platform and we're not really sure whether this is bad or not...

Although it might be a little too late (but I joined this forum yesterday) I can answer your question.

Gd is a library that enables a program or script to create images on the fly and export them as a gif, jpg, png and many other formats. The php-gd extension is an interface to this library.

Chamilo will (probably) use it for drawing graphs, but I'm not using Chamilo long enough to be sure.

and how can one enable this as i think it might solve my problem with the import of thumbnails in the profile section of chamilo

as mine is of (red) on:
ExtensionLoaded: gd no
ExtensionLoaded: xsl no

and red mark on:
output_buffering
while i have Op and Op is expected??

if yr on ubuntu or debian

sudo apt-get install php5-gd = fixed

else : no picture upload possible

for xsl:

sudo apt-get install php5-xsl = fixed

for output_buffering: edit php.ini and put output_buffering = On
save
restart apache and its green
