Bounty

Hello,

On some CMS forums, you can create what is called a "bounty".

When several users need a feature, they ask for it and they pay for it.
If a developer is okay with the price, he gets the money and develops the feature.

The feature is added to the software and available for all users in the next version (without commercial license).

Users who are not professionals can have their features added for a small price.
I like that idea and I think maybe it could be a good idea for Chamilo.

Let's take an example of Bounty,

I would like to have a complete integration of Paypal in Chamilo.
I want to be able to sell memberships to my course. After having created an account on chamilo, the user who want an access to a course must pay on paypal.

As user of chamilo, I can give 300$ for this feature.

Let's say a developer would be able to develop this feature for 1K$, we need 2 people more :)

Are some people interested with this concept ?
Are developers of Chamilo also interested with this concept ?

You might want to take into consideration that a single account can be logged in from several IP's at the same time... So, another feature is needed before getting a Paypal add-on.

Hi Laurent,

Just for your information, a package named Prestashop is available for selling courses with Chamilo.

So, it is a bit complicated to install, but working well.

For more information, get a look on the following sites:

http://code.google.com/p/prestashop-chamilo/

http://www.prestashop.com/

Hi Laurent,

I'm not against the bounty idea. It would probably help us dinamize the development a bit, and at the same time ensure - through the multiple stakeholders aspect - ensure that we get all the developments as free software (which is rarely the case with isolated developments, sadly).

Do you know of any "system" in place to do that? I guess we could organize them and charge them through Kickstarter or something similar (except Kickstarter requires a driving license in the US or Canada, I think)

Hello Yannick,

Hi Laurent,

OK, I'm following in English to avoid loosing the non-French.

I've seen it on Drupal as well but I don't like the fact there is no guarantee on the engagement you make as a (financial) contributor.

Crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter enable you to get an engagement from the contributors (basically I think PayPal "blocks" their money until the resolution of the project launch - whether it is started or not), which is a much better, much more secure solution, although there is a small percentage taken by the hosting site. This being said, managing money transfers from several countries can be a real pain and eliminate the motivation of any sane developer.

Technically, it would just be a matter of finding a system that is particularly free-software supportive and that lets us get the money out if we're not American.

There we go, a little research and I found a series of sites that might match: http://fr.ekopedia.org/Crowdfunding#Micro-projets_personnels_et_associatifs_de_toute_nature

I guess the one that matched the most (in description) was https://elveos.org/, but it was closed down. This being said, the source code is available (I'm not sure we want to host this ourselves, though).

Ulule (http://www.ulule.com/) seems to match the description as well, it hosts projects that make "good things happen" and allows payment via paypal and a series of other ways. Kisskissbankbank aussi (http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/) seems to be the same thing.
Both work on a 5%+3% commission base (3% for secure payment, whatever this might mean), which is relatively reasonnable considering the effort required to organize the collection of fund another way.

We could set up a template for Chamilo projects, so people wanting to propose a project can pre-propose them on http://support.chamilo.org, then move them to one of Ulule or Kisskiss quickly and get financing.

I think this could work :-)

It seems ulule or KissKissBankBank feet to our needs!
I think 3% is acceptable for users. ;)
