Chamilo 2.0 es nuevo ¿Cierto?. Más o menos. Como cualquier producto nuevo o completamente rediseñado, le toma un tiempo estar completamente terminado. Chamilo 2.0 ha ido evolucionando casi que orgánicamente en su mayor parte, durante cuatro años, y en ese tiempo muchas cosas han cambiado. Para 2006 una parte bastante considerable de la comunidad PHP aún estaba incursionando con el PHP4, que en cierta forma contaba con posibilidades limitadas en cuanto al desarrollo orientado a objetos.
Aun utilizando PHP5 desde esos comienzos, esta nueva versión aun estaba lejos de ser perfecta (que sigue siendo el caso en este momento en que estamos compilando este documento). Sin embargo nos permitió implementar un número importante de mejoras técnicas y nuevos conceptos en el proyecto. Una de las piedras angulares de Chamilo 2.0, al menos técnicamente hablando, sería su modularidad y se efectuaron varios pasos para que el sistema sea modular y ampliable. La funcionalidad fue segmentada en varias "aplicaciones básicas", librerías y aplicaciones opcionales (instalables).
La aplicación-cursos se convertiría en una de las llamadas "aplicaciones opcionales". Diseño y traducciones fueron también modulares y fáciles de agregar en caso de ser necesarios. Los objetos de contenido podían ser instalados o removidos según lo requerido, y el sistema era los bastante inteligente como para permitir las conexiones entre varias aplicaciones opcionales. En resumen, cuatro años de desarrollo resultaron en un tipo general de estructura de archivos creado por consenso entre los desarrolladores activos, mejorando las cosas sobre la marcha para lograr aun mejores resultados.
¿Era perfecto? De ninguna manera, pero era muy factible y aún seguimos pensando en futuras vías para mejorar las cosas. La mayor parte de las ideas fueron pospuestas debido a requerimientos prioritarios y, principalmente, porque ellos, eso pensábamos, no eran mas que cambios cosméticos de apariencia con poco valor agregado en términos de facilidad de desarrollo. Era el año 2009 y todo estaba bien ¿Lo estaba?
Un día de verano de 2009, el grupo feliz conocido como The PHP Group, lanzaron el PHP 5.3, y a pesar que todo estaba tranquilo, pudimos ver que se venía una tormenta. Era el momento de reunir nuestra comunidad de desarrolladores, evaluar la fuerza del enemigo y llegar a un plan de batalla. ¿El inicio de la segunda era?
